The Backyard Buccaneer: My Hunt for Drake’s Treasure

My backyard in Greenbrae Ridge in Via Corona had always been a source of wonder, offering breathtaking views that seemed frozen in time. One rainy morning, however, something new caught my eye: peculiar stones scattered across the ground. Some were emerald green, shaped like arrowheads. Seemingly unusual and fascinating, this sparks curiosity within me, wondering if these green emeralds indicate something bigger.

Following the trail of these intriguing stones, I discovered a hidden pattern – a series of triangular rocks pointing directly toward the water tank on the hilltop. Climbing higher, I gasped. The stones from my yard formed a perfect, elongated triangle leading straight down to where I stood. This intricate arrangement couldn’t be a coincidence.

Back home, my enthusiasm grew as I unearthed over 250 possible arrowheads. Although experts dismissed them as natural formations, I refused to be discouraged. My neighbor, Rod, acknowledged my interest, and a thought hit me like a bolt of lightning: could Sir Francis Drake, the legendary English explorer, have buried his treasure right here, beneath my feet? It was a fantastical notion, but the evidence, or at least the possibility, was too compelling to ignore.

One detail solidified this theory – a painting depicting a Miwok hunting scene mirrored the exact landscape visible from my yard. The parallels were undeniable. My research into Drake intensified, and the more I learned, the more convinced I became. The recurring number 72 (my lucky number, coincidentally), Drake’s voyages, the legendary Plate of Brass, his “Six Houses on a Square,” and the mysterious Hondius Broadside Map – all these pieces started to fit together like fragments of a forgotten puzzle.

Studying the Hondius map with renewed focus, I compared it to the layout of my land and the surrounding area. To my interest, the map matched perfectly! Even a treasure zone extended into Rod’s yard, prompting me to solidify my interest in exploring more.

Armed with a map of my property and fueled by a burning desire, I pinpointed the treasure’s location: a barren spot where nothing seemed to grow. Initially, I enlisted the help of friends, but after two days of fruitless digging, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Equipped with a mini-backhoe, I delved deeper, unearthing soil with an unusual color and strange, bag-shaped indentations.

These discoveries fueled my belief, even when Rod grew impatient. To solidify my case further, I had the soil tested, and the results were astonishing – high levels of gold and silver! Could this be the footprint of Drake’s elusive gold smelter?

Unfortunately, fate intervened, and I fell ill with Boron poisoning, a consequence of my relentless digging. Yet, even sickness couldn’t dampen my spirit. A conversation with a Drake Navigator’s Guild expert, who mysteriously advised me to abandon my pursuit, only ignited my determination to continue.

With new twists and turns emerging at every step, I unearthed an Aztec carving, deciphered the Hondius map’s secrets with Google Earth’s help, and even encountered a local Drake scholar who shared valuable insights. As I meticulously followed the map’s guidance, my backyard became a warzone, riddled with craters and trenches, urging me to discover more.
